iSeries (AS/400) System Management - Work Practice Review

iSeries Navigator

The iSeries is going GUI and with it comes new; better and easier ways to manage your system(s). You can now secure objects, manage user profiles, see jobs in job queues and active jobs, manage spool files and all through one interface, iSeries Navigator. iSeries Navigator lets you control most iSeries functions with a point-and-click interface. This tool can streamline into a few mouse clicks many operations that would take multiple iSeries commands. 95% of iSeries command functions are now available through iSeries Navigator and some configuration and set-up functions are only available through this windows interface.

iSeries Central

iSeries Navigator includes a TCP/IP systems management feature called iSeries Central, which you launch from a toolbar button in the iSeries Navigator main window. iSeries Central allows you define a central iSeries server to manage multiple systems on a TCP/IP network. iSeries Navigator runs only on the central server, which passes requests and data among the other systems in the network. iSeries Central also lets you create system groups - specific subsets of systems in the network - to help you more efficiently manage network systems. For example, you could group systems by geographical location, business unit, or specific uses of the systems. iSeries Central helps operators and administrators keep tabs on iSeries in the network by providing real-time performance-monitoring capabilities, such as notification of events and automatic responses to events.

Using our extensive experience of both products and system management techniques, Silverlake will review your existing processes and procedures and advise/make recommendations on changes you should consider. Once the evaluation process is complete we will help you to convert your processes and procedures to iSeries Navigator and Central. During the conversion process we will provide training and education in the use and implementation of the new tools.
